Abstract
Background
The present study was carried out to determine the effect of diclofenac and doxycycline in patients with acne vulgaris and to evaluate the effect of the combination on the pharmacokinetics of doxycycline and diclofenac in the treatment of acne.
Methods
In the present study, an experimental study was carried out in patients with acne vulgaris. The study included seven patients (9 females and 10 males, mean age = 28.6 years) who received the combination of doxycycline and diclofenac at the dosage of 50 mg/day. The clinical efficacy of doxycycline and the combination of doxycycline and diclofenac was assessed. The mean duration of acne lesions was 21.7 days (range: 8 to 46 days) and the mean duration of acne lesions in patients with acne vulgaris was 15.7 days (range: 2 to 21 days). The pharmacokinetic parameters of doxycycline and doxycycline plus doxycycline were compared in all of the patients. The mean half-lives of the drugs were 1.5 hr and 1.8 hr, respectively. The mean time to achieve peak plasma concentrations (Tmax) of the drugs was significantly lower than that of the doxycycline group (0.36 hr vs. 0.25 hr). The mean terminal half-lives of the drugs were 4.7 hr and 5.6 hr. The terminal half-lives of doxycycline and the combination of doxycycline and doxycycline and doxycycline and doxycycline and doxycycline were comparable. The mean area under the curve (AUC) of the drugs was significantly lower in the combination group (2.5-2.9 versus 0.6-0.8) than in the other groups (2.2-2.5 versus 0.8). The mean steady state plasma concentrations of the drugs were lower in the combination group (3.7-3.9 versus 2.4-2.7) than in the other groups (2.0-2.0 versus 0.6-0.8).
Conclusion
The results of the present study suggest that the combination of doxycycline and doxycycline and the combination of doxycycline and doxycycline and doxycycline and doxycycline and diclofenac and doxycycline and doxycycline and diclofenac and doxycycline and doxycycline and doxycycline and diclofenac was effective in the treatment of acne vulgaris in patients with acne vulgaris.
